The Gloriana on the final leg of its 70-day, 8,000-mile journey
around the United Kingdom ahead of the opening ceremony. The torch,
which has snaked its way through the UK and been seen by millions of
excited spectators, was taken down the Thames on the royal rowbarge. The
last torchbearer of the day was Amber Charles, 22, from Newham, east
London, who delivered London's Olympic bid in 2004. She carried the
flame to Tower Bridge before it was taken to City Hall,
Sticks in my mind from that first view of the Olympics through the eyes of these directors is not the heroics of Mark Spitz and Olga Korbut or even the murder of the 11 Israeli athletes. It is the poetic agony of the unknown Russian weightlifter and Swedish pole-vaulter who had trained for 10 years only to fail in 10 seconds.

The big finale is the entrance of the Olympic Flame into the Stadium. It is passed through the athletes to the final Torchbearer, who will ceremoniously light the Cauldron, indicating the beginning of the Games. The Flame will continue to burn for the whole of the Games.
